Methods of Auto Transport – Terminal Transport vs. Door-to-Door Direct Transport

People who are new to the car shipping industry are flooded with many options. There are many auto shippers in the market offering different types of services. Generally, though, there are two options you can use to transport your car: door-to-door direct car transport and terminal auto transport.

To know the type of auto shipping service, you will need to understand the differences of the two, both their pros and cons. Other factors such as the destination and the type and condition of your car should also be considered. This is an important step in coming up with the right auto shipping decision.

Terminal shipping is a type of car shipping requiring you to pick up and drop off the car at a designated point. Oftentimes, a terminal will simply be a large parking lot or a warehouse where your car will remain until car transport company can process a full load. After the trailer is fully loaded, the vehicle transporter will start delivering all the vehicles to the different destination terminals.

When your vehicle arrives at the terminal, it will be unloaded, ready for you to pick up. Many auto shippers provide terminal-to-terminal car transport discount. This is a more convenient option for those people living in crowded downtown places where the service of door-to-door delivery is impossible.

However, the disadvantage of terminal transporting is its lack of security from theft and vandalism. While terminals are fairly secured, the high concentration of vehicles is a tempting target for thieves. Also, the car is likely to be subjected to harmful elements.

Terminal transport has its own pros and cons. Its advantage is that it’s less expensive compared to door-to-door delivery. You can also drop off the car anytime instead of having to wait for the trailer truck. However, it is less convenient and poses a risk to your car’s safety.

Door-to-door direct car transport is the other type of auto transport, which means that your vehicle will be picked up and delivered at the exact address you specified.  Unlike terminal shipping, which requires a full load of cars to be assembled before they are shipped, door-to-door car shipping is a lot faster since a full load of cars is always gathered before picking up. This process lets the driver deliver the car faster after the pickups are done.

Door-to-door auto transport is commonly the preferred method of car transport even though it’s a little more expensive. For the most part, this works out to be a better method in terms of service at a reasonable price. It is also more favorable in terms of insurance and liability.

In terminal shipping, if the vehicle is damaged in the process, it will be difficult to determine who is liable for the damage. However, with door-to-door delivery, you car is placed in one truck for the entire process and shipping trip. Hence, any damage on your vehicle can be referred to one driver.

Whatever you choose, the ideal auto transport option depends on your situation and preferences. Before making up your mind, consult your transport company about your special needs to help you decide which transport service is better for you. Consider your budget and your time line when deciding on your car shipping service.
