RN to BSN students are trained in giving a complete cardiovascular assessment, which includes the taking of blood pressure and pulse. Nurses listen to the beating of a heart and can make primary assessment whether there is something wrong with it or none. Nurses check for heart arrhythmia or heart murmurs.
Another kind of assessment is done on the gastrointestinal organs.
These include the stomach, intestines and esophagus.
Students are taught how to assess these organs and look for evidence of protrusions, irregularities, rashes, scars or any other problems using stethoscopes.
The human skeleton is another major system that makes up the human body and that a nurse must be competently knowledgeable about. Assessing one’s skeletal structure involves checking body posture and symmetry, as well as joints, bones and muscles. Also assessed are the patient’s motor skills, muscle tone, and coordination of movements.
Basically, a nurse checks everything there is to assess: breathing, lymphs, muscles, nerves, hearing, sight, smell, finger movements, blood pressure, height, weight, and so on. The patient’s mental and emotional stability is also a nurse’s concern. A nurse is definitely in need of RN to BSN programs for proper education or training.
