Things to Avoid When Applying for a Masters Degree Online

Discover certain things to avoid when applying for a masters degree online to increase your chances of getting accepted to a reputable, reliable and preferred school.

The convenience of applying for a masters degree online is very well-known nowadays.  Compared to a decade before, online masters degrees are now the preferred mode of education for people who juggle work, personal life and studies.  With hundreds of schools advertising throughout the internet, applicants are faced with the question: Which school will I chose to take my graduate studies in?

Driven individuals seek further education to advance in their careers.  Getting a masters degree ensures not just higher monetary compensation but also prestige.  The MBA written next to a person’s name adds a certain kind of credibility that can help the individual command respect and climb up the corporate ladder.

Because of more people wanting to have a masters degree, there are schools that claim to be the best despite being unaccredited.  Degree mills constantly bombard students with advertisements that suddenly pop up whenever they are browsing the internet.  Scouting students then need to be aware of these unaccredited schools that will usually milk them of their hard-earned cash for a diploma or certificate that is a total waste.

Consult the list of accredited schools offering online masters degrees.  Serious applicants need to consider what school they’re getting their degrees from because a school’s name and reputation can help promote their careers.  Usually, no employer will take notice if an individual gets his or her degree from an unknown school.

However, do not just choose a school to get a masters degree online just because of its name.  There are some schools that might be popular but do not have the best masters degree program.  Read up on several student forums to get an idea about most masters degree programs before signing up.

Naturally, avoid applying to a graduate program that does not exist.  To do this, snoop around their website or email and contact them through phone.  There is no restriction prohibiting students from knowing all that they can before signing up for a masters degree program online.

Avoid programs that boast of a shorter time of completion.  It generally takes two to three years to complete a masters degree, even online. If a masters degree online program says otherwise, it may an indication that the program is shady.

Be meticulous.  Before submitting the application form, make sure that all the fields are filled with the correct information.  It can be frustrating to wait for an application only to get rejected because of one blank space.

Like on-campus masters degree programs, online masters degrees require a personal statement of intent from the candidates in the form of a personal essay.  Even with remarkable GMAT, GPA/GRE scores, applications can still be rejected based on poorly-written personal statements.  Most admissions committees consider personal statements because this is where they can gauge if the applicant can contribute or benefit from the program.

Naturally, applicants should avoid asking for an extension when it comes to a deadline.  Most admissions departments do not give special treatment and not meeting the deadline can be a major turn-off. Keep these simple tasks in mind when applying for a masters degree online to increase your chances of getting accepted.

Online Masters Degree: The Importance of a Masters Diploma

Be convinced to enter in a post graduate education program and realize how an online Masters degree is much more convenient.

Society is constructed in such a way that the most learned and most educated individuals get the best chances to the best job positions and career options.  Mandated education begins in pre-elementary school to tertiary or up until an individual earns a Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college program or associate’s degree from a 3-year vocational program.  A Masters degree, online Masters degree or doctorate degree is earned after university as an optional diploma.

A university graduate with honors is encouraged to proceed to a post-graduate degree and earn the diploma he or she deserves.  Some honor graduates (the really good ones) are even given the chance to proceed directly onto a doctorate program, but rarely.  The most common path is to take a Master’s program after college and then decide whether to apply for a job thereafter or continue to earn a Ph.D. degree.

Studying at a Masters level is similar to undergrad school in many ways but with more discussions and less of the spoon-feeding lectures.  A Masters course assumes that all college graduates have the ability to engage in a discourse and to express themselves, and so they are allowed and challenged to speak their mind.  There is also plenty of research work and field exposure.

Masters programs expect much from students and this is apparent with the thesis and reports to be generated.  While college papers and reports are best composed using the third person point of view, Master papers, research and thesis are often written in the first person.  The post-grad student is expected to give his or her own opinion or evaluation about a given subject matter.

A Masters program is typically completed by submitting a 20,000-word thesis that has been written and researched on for the past two years.  It is a rigorous process but the rigor corresponds to the value of this diploma.  Earning a Masters degree is crucial for the following reasons.

One, most high-level jobs require that a professional gets a Masters diploma.  Some employers require that their employees earn this degree while or during their employment.  In New York, for example, teachers are expected to complete a Masters program in their field of expertise not later than five years after they have been hired.

Two, this post-graduate degree directly corresponds to higher salary.   In most professions, professionals with higher academic attainment almost always get a salary increase.  In the field of nursing, for example, a regular nurse may become an anesthesiologist or midwife after taking a masters course and automatically get a salary that is three times more than what they used to get.

Third, a Masters diploma is definitely a stepping stone to better career opportunities including a complete change of career.  For example, elementary or high school teachers are allowed to teach in college only after they have completed a Masters program.  Also, an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) empowers any professional to engage in business or be employed as a manager or business leader.

Finally, a number of people engage in higher education simply for the love of learning.  College students jump to post-college education even before career has entered their mind.  There are also non-working parents who decide to pursue higher leaning but have not been employed at all or have no plans of applying for a job.

The only challenge to pursuing higher education is a conflict in time and schedule.  It is for this reason that many hard-working professionals decide to enter in a Masters degree online.  An online Masters degree program allows professionals to work and study at the same time.

Be An Effective Manager With A Business Management Degree

Find out how to be an effective manager and leader with the help of a business management degree programs.

An effective manager possesses the right set of skills and knows how to use these skills over the right set of people. Effective management skills are observed by an individual from persons of authority and he learns to apply them as he matures.  A persons gains an opportunity to enhance these skills and apply them to practical functions such as business through proper education such as in a business management degree.

People in supervisory or management positions can bring out the greatest potential from their support staff using certain competencies.  Leadership is one of the most important skills that an effective manager should have.  Leadership means influencing people to work willingly towards defined business goals.

Good leaders tend to encourage high quality results and performance from the people they handle.  Effective leadership means balancing the exercise of control over one’s subordinates, and the empowerment of team members to improve collective performance.  There are three categories of leadership styles depending on the degree of control and empowerment used.

The first and most conventional category of leadership is authoritative.  This type of leadership makes use of strong control over people in relation to the performance of their tasks according to set objectives.  Authoritative leaders are bent on giving orders and directions, and are more concerned with task achievement rather than staff development.

The second category of leadership is called participative leadership.  Participative leadership is characterized by the engagement and involvement of team members in setting the direction towards the attainment of certain goals.  There is sharing of control among the leader and members of a team and tasks are achieved by fostering commitment of each member on his own role or participation.

The third and last category of leadership is called laissez-faire.  This type of leadership involves the surrender of any type of leadership responsibility or control to the group members. Laissez-faire type leaders impose minimal restrictions and little interference to the activities of their subordinates, which at times results in poor performance of tasks at hand.

An effective manager adopts a leadership role that strikes a balance between goal attainment, performance management, team empowerment and staff development.  Apart from leadership skills, an effective manager must possess good communication skills.  He must be able to conceive a message, send the message across to his team, and facilitate coordination between him and among the members of the team.

An effective manager should make use of motivational techniques to engage people and reinforce the desired performance from his entire team.  Motivational techniques can take the form of rewards and incentives to high performing staff, or imposing discipline and performance monitoring to ensure that tasks are carried out completely and on schedule.  An effective manager must be able to delegate new responsibilities to the right people, and develop new competencies whenever called for by the tasks at hand.

Effective management calls for a recognition of the different behavioral needs and expectations of people.  As groups and individuals differ in terms of capacities and management tolerance, dealing with different groups requires flexibility, and supplementing individual competencies as needed.  An adaptive management approach ensures that the productive potential of support staff is realized and productive work relationships are nurtured.

The management skills mentioned above are among the diverse collection of management theories and concepts that could be learned from business management degrees.  Even professionals who are already handling management positions may still benefit from learning new concepts and skills by earning an online business management degree.  Establishing oneself as an effective manager requires constantly updating one’s skills to keep up with the fast-changing workplace culture, and ultimately creating productive, rewarding and fulfilling work environments for any business.
